How do you react to finding a close friend in grave danger, when rescuing them would put your own safety at risk? A fun day at the beach changes unexpectedly when three canine friends discover their butterfly mentor is trapped in a nasty spider’s web and in mortal danger. Disregarding the risks involved, they decide to follow an ingenious but hazardous plan in an attempt to save their friend’s life. Accompanied by a lively scatter-brained seagull named Steven, Bella, the older beagle, accepts the challenge to race against time in an attempt to save Barbara the butterfly’s life. Kai, a large German Shepherd, and Roxy, a young Beagle, remain behind to ensure the spider upholds his side of the agreement not to eat their friend, and to tend to the dehydrated and rapidly weakening butterfly. Bella and Steven embark on an exciting and eventful journey in search of a legendary Acacia tree on which a precious life-extending wonder-food grows, but which is protected by a ferocious tribe of chanting stinging ants and their queen. Their expedition includes a hilarious pirate macaw and an exhilarating underwater ride on a suave and charming dolphin. While they are away, young Roxy agrees to a daring trip alone to fetch water for the distressed butterfly where she encounters a grave threat and her bravery and faith is tested. Spencer the Spider is intrigued by Barbara’s level of faith and the depth of loyalty between the unlikely friends. While Kai attempts to answer the doubtful and sceptical Spencer’s questions about the existence of God and the purpose of life, Spencer is astonished at the inner peace and abundant kindness reflected in the captive Barbara. The Spider and The Butterfly is a humorous and exciting adventure encapsulating the values of friendship, patience, bravery, kindness, and loyalty, and is an age appropriate means to evangelize children and teach them how to witness to other children.

How Kai got her boots … and a new family!

Kai, my beloved German Shepard, is the inspiration behind one of the main characters in my children’s adventure story, The Spider and The Butterfly.  Kai is very special to me in so many ways, but exceptionally unique because she wears boots on her back legs, yes boots! This is her story…. In 2006 a friend […]

Choosing the Character Names in The Spider and The Butterfly

I was thrilled to finally have a good idea and solid foundation with which I could begin to write the children’s story. I now faced the task of coming up with a title, deciding who the various characters would be, and then finding suitable character names. Fortunately, it all fell into place quite naturally. First, […]

The Motivation behind The Spider and the Butterfly

It’s a sunny Saturday as I write this and guess what we are doing…we’re having a braai! In my last blog I explained that in South Africa we call a barbeque a braai. As I sit writing, the smell of freshly lit wood smoke accompanied by the crackle of fire is drifting through my home, and […]
